Yearbook Identifies Student As ‘Black Girl’ (or: What Were They Thinking?)
I thought this was a hoax but the source was neither CBS nor Newsweek so it looks like it is true. I believe the story that it was an accident but lack of intent doesn’t make it any less stupid. Come on.
Yearbook Identifies Student As ‘Black Girl’ - News - MSNBC.com
WAXAHACHIE, Texas - A North Texas school district has apologized to a student identified only as “Black Girl” in a high school yearbook photo of the school’s National Honor Society. The teen identified as “Black Girl” is the only black student in the photo.
“I was embarrassed,” said the student, Shadoyia Jones. “I was disappointed that they didn’t catch the error.” Waxahachie school district spokeswoman Candace Ahlfinger said the district and the school board issued an immediate apology when the caption was reported.
Ahlfinger said the caption apparently was intended as a placeholder until the yearbook staff could identify the student.
The girl in question, Shadoyia, seems to be managing it pretty well. Let’s hope that Jessie Jackson doesn’t show up to exploit this out of proportion.
