Weekend Edition: All the LA Gossip You Need
Mickey Kaus has commented in his blog and in the LA Times (sorry, link gone) that what that paper needs is a good gossip column, like the New York Post has. But who needs that, when there’s Defamer? Some of our favorites:
“Pitt and Jolie’s Sexual African Safari Gets More Sexual““Jerry Bruckheimer: Enemy Of Words, Thinking“
From a post about Michael Bay, director of some of the worst movies of all time (The Rock; Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, etc), who apparently has been thinking deep thoughts about the clones in his upcoming “The Island”: “We feel confident that if Bay were to set a phalanx of clones to the busy work of executing unnecessary camera angles, cerebellum-jarring quick-cuts, and the monotonous blowing-up-of-shit so that he could devote more time to aimlessly cruising around town in a Ferrari, he’d quickly find himself losing his essential humanity.”
and re the made-for-People-Magazine Cruise / Holmes courtship, “Tom Cruise is shifting the focus of his publicity campaign/relationship back to where it might gain more traction. He’s now offering teaser-friendly soundbites celebrating the virtues of his new associate.”
Defamer is an interesting beast — gossip + counter-PR + snarkiness. There’s no way a major newspaper could offer anything like it, and why should they? An online site can have a much wider net of tipsters, be more timely, more R-rated, and in the end be more interesting than anything the Times could do. Defamer can’t have correspondents in Berlin and the Times can’t report on celeb sightings at Starbucks.
