Cambodian Midget Fighting League

We are taking a break from our round the clock coverage of Antonio Villaraigosa’s 2009 campaign to talk about Cambodian Midgets.

If you haven’t received an email with a link to a story about the Cambodian Midget Fighting League, then just wait, you will. (I’ve received it 3 times already). It is a story of a fight between 40 midgets and a lion under the following rules:

  • Fight takes place between 1 full-grown, male African lion and 40 midgets
  • The midgets are unarmed (no guns, baseball bats, tasers, etc.)
  • The fight takes place in a closed arena (a racquetball court for example)
  • Fight is over when either a) the lion is dead, or b) all 40 midgets are dead or unable to fight back (severely wounded)
  • Lion is highly agitated, midgets know there’s no way out until the lion is dead (they have to fight)
  • The midgets are not specially trained to fight (not like the Cambodian fighting ones in the article)
  • The midgets are given 5 minutes before the fight to prepare/strategize.

The speed at which this email has circulated the world is an example of what happens when a story catches fire on the Internet. Particularly when the story is ridiculous but faintly plausible. It also helps when it is not particularly politically correct.

The midget hoax started 2 weeks ago when a guy dummied up a a fake BBC article. He did it to fool a friend with whom he had a bet. He posted on the net on May 3rd, others saw the article, and then forwarded the link on to friends. Soon his original ISP yanked it because he was over his bandwidth allocation. Once Independent Sources received the email a 3rd time it was time to act.
