Not What The Doctor Ordered

The LA Times editorial page has some extremely odd advice for the next mayor of that city. According to writer Swati Pandey, unnamed “economists and government officials” agree that in order to recover lost jobs, the city has to reduce the cost of doing business, streamline permitting and licensing, improve infrastructure, seek to bring new businesses to the city … and “expand city bureaucracy!”

Yes, hiring more people to do the same amount of work would be a way to bring back jobs — at least for the time being. But it would also be a way to push LA’s already overtaxed businesses and residents toward friendlier places like Glendale and Burbank. Perhaps the next mayor should not look on Detroit — with no jobs and a massive bureaucracy — as a model.
