The Churchill Case: Is there Common Sense in Academia?
There has been a great deal of debate since Prof. Churchill’s hateful and moronic comments surfaced on what if anything should be done.
Here is the case for Mr. Churchill:
The First Amendment of the Constitution.
Here is the case against him:
Notwithstanding the Constitution which guarantees his right to express his views, no matter how hateful, uninformed, ignorant, etc., the Constitution does not guarantee him a position at a taxpayer subsidized University. He is not a capable teacher and should be fired. This is a message that is coming from University of Colorado students, alumni, Colorado taxpayers, Native American groups, and pretty much anyone with an ounce of common sense.
Among the reasons:
His statements go beyond provocative. They are more like pro-terrorist, hateful, …
He is a habitual liar and a fraud. He constantly refers to himself as an American Indian. He does this to help him profit from his art sales which he markets as authentically Indian though they are anything but. According to the Morning Star Institute, a Native American rights rroup in Washington , D.C., the Census data shows he was born to two white parents and he has not shown up on the rolls of the tribes he says he belonged to. The chief of the Oklahoma tribe stated that they “had no association with Churchill in any capacity whatsoever”.
He is a hypocrite. He does not believe in free speech when applied to others. On Columbus Day he was arrested for trying to stop an Italian American parade. Churchill has also launched slanderous attacks on David Bradely, a swell know Indian artists in Santa Fe who was pursuing federal legislation to require those selling their work as Indian art to be able to prove their tribal ties. The proposed law is intended to stop people like Churchill who impersonate legitimate Native Americans. Instead of putting forth an argument against the proposed measure, Churchill instead launched personal attacks against Bradely.
If a guy like Ward Churchill can’t be fired, then there really is no common sense in academia.
