“Boxer For President”: Clamor the Republicans!
Seemingly playing into Republican strategies, the only person who could do more damage to the Democratic Party than either Howard Dean as party chairman or Hillary Clinton as front runner, would be the increasing profile of left-of-left California Senator Barbara Boxer.
The Los Angeles Times, seemingly oblivious to how undesirable she appears to swing voters (including moderates in her own party such as Diane Feinstein) dedicated a high profile front page California Section (above the fold) article to her rising stature within the Democratic Party. The Times claims that senatorial colleagues are secretly encouraging her to run (though the Times didn’t name the senators, I’d guess that McCain and other Republicans were among those whispering for her to do so). The Times lauded her bold challenging of Rice’s “respect for truth” though failing to mention Boxer’s compete disregard for such truth in follow up discussion on her approach.
Her potential for political fodder for the center and right won’t be limited to Saturday Night Live spoofs of her as a screaming fife (and I’m waiting for the techno remixes of her a la Techno Dean from the last election). In 1992, it was disclosed that she had 143 overdrafts from the House Bank. I don’t know about you, but I usually figure out that I’m overdrawn well before that. She certainly wasn’t alone in the check kiting scheme but with her now standing up in her jarring, shrill-like voice about Rice’s track record on truthfulness perhaps it’s time to revisit Barbara’s breaches with the truth. However, if the Republicans are smart they’ll do no such thing and instead do everything their power to make the Democrats the party of Michael Moore, John Dean and Barbara Boxer–and be utterly unelectable in 2008.
