National Special Interest Group Day
Since two national holidays — Labor Day and MLK Day* — celebrate Democratic Party interest groups, do the Republicans get to keep pace now that they control the presidency and both houses of Congress? Do we need a national Guns and Butter Day? Will they bring back Flag Day? Reverse the long term decline of Columbus Day (perhaps rebranding it “Manifest Destiny Day”)?
If they really want to add a few million votes, move MLK day to the day after President’s Day, change the name to Civil Rights Day (remember when President’s Day actually had something to do with Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays? No more), thus giving everyone a four day weekend in the depths of winter. Could this swing Minnesota and Wisconsin in ‘08?
* … I guess that’s really one national holiday and one government / bank holiday
